An elderly Spanish woman stunned her family when she arrived at her nursing home – more than a week after they were told she had died of COVID-19.
According to the newspaper La Voz de Galicia, the family of Rogelia Blanco was informed on January 13 that the 85-year-old woman had died of the virus and that her funeral was the next day. They could not attend due to protocols that took place during the pandemic.
But on Saturday – ten days later – she arrived home again in Xove, northern Spain. Her husband, who also lives there, was in a state of shock.
“I could not believe it,” her husband told the newspaper. “I cried after my wife’s death.”
The confusion occurred when Blanco and other residents who tested positive for COVID-19 were transferred last month to another home, the Os Gozos residence in Pereiro de Aguiar, for specialized treatment.
The woman who died was in fact Blanco’s roommate.
“Among the elderly people transferred were two women who were given the same room,” the San Rosendo Foundation, which runs the Xove nursing home, told the newspaper. An identification error during the transfer of Xove to Pereiro de Aguiar resulted in the death of one of them being certified on January 13, although the identity was incorrectly assigned. ‘
The foundation expressed its regret and called it an ‘unfortunate incident’, according to the newspaper.
“This is a one-off event, among the more than 100 transfers made to Os Gozos since December last year,” the statement said.
A court has been notified to prevent the error.
