Egyptian swimmer jumps out of water to new heights

The 21-year-old from Ismailia reached the climax of the unusual event when, according to Guinness World Records, he made a spectacular jump of 2.3 m (7 feet 11 inches).

A monofin is a single fin that fits over both feet.

Guinness World Records showed Shaaban’s performance in a TikTok post on Thursday.

Shaaban is past a record held since 2011 by three men, the Italian Cesare Fumarola and Stefano Figini and the Egyptian Soliman Sayed, who each achieved a jump of 6 meters 6 inches (2 meters).

Shaaban’s jump took place during an Egyptian diving and lifesaving federation in Cairo in November.

In a report published by the Guinness World Records, Shaaban explains the training session that offers him his abilities.

“Bigger muscles make it hard to jump in water, so I try … to increase flexibility, improve muscle reflexes and, of course, build stronger legs,” he said.

Shaaban is also one of the world’s fastest underwater sprinters, the report said.

“Swimming is peaceful. A storm of inexplicable thoughts crosses your mind underwater, but it’s definitely different and healing,” Shaaban told Guinness World Records.

“As a sprinter, I understand that even thinking burns oxygen, so I tend to concentrate in the present moment. Part of our training is to learn how to be extremely relaxed in the water.”
