Egypt will release the giant container ship that blocked the Suez Canal for almost a week once an agreement is reached on compensation for related losses, the head of the canal said.

“The ship is ready,” Osama Rabie said in an interview on Egyptian television. As soon as ‘we agree on compensation, the ship leaves and the case is closed.’

The Ever Given blocked the channel for six days, according to the calculation of the world markets and the Suez Canal Authority cost $ 15 million a day in lost revenue. Rabie said Egypt wants compensation for the losses, as well as the cost of freeing the vessel.

The ship and its cargo are currently in the Great Bitter Lake, about halfway along the canal.
