Eddie Murphy recently told his side of the iconic story about Prince and a pick-up basketball game that his late brother, Charlie Murphy, once told in a hilarious way and reappeared on ‘Chappelle’s Show’.
The comedian confirmed during an appearance in ‘The Tonight Show’ on Thursday that his brother’s version of their iconic match against the late ‘Purple Rain’ legend was ‘completely and absolutely accurate’.
Eddie Murphy described what everyone was wearing at the time to present Jimmy Fallon, saying that Prince proposed the idea of playing basketball while wearing a leather jacket and a gold chain around his waist.
“A suitcase, I think,” Eddie Murphy adds with a laugh. (Watch the full clip below.)
Prince’s revolutionary and iconic style was at the heart of the memorable “Chappelle’s Show” sketch in which Dave Chappelle played the late singer while wearing a purple ensemble, complete with a ruffle shirt.
In the sketch of the middle of the 2000 series, Charlie Murphy tells the night when Prince and his team beat him, his brother and their team handy in a game of pick-up basketball.
“I dare you to challenge Prince for a one-on-one ball game,” Charlie Murphy said at one point in the segment.
During Eddie Murphy’s appearance in ‘The Tonight Show’, he said that one of his teammates did not play as well that night as he normally would, because he was wearing some small sneakers from Prince.
The actor “Coming 2 America” said that his friend Larry wore the shoes that the legendary singer lent him despite the size because he was “so excited to put on Prince’s sneakers.”
In 2017, guitarist Micki Free, who played in Prince’s team that night, told Esquire that everything that happened in the sketch of ‘Chappelle’s Show’ was ‘real’.
The iconic sketch is one of Charlie Murphy’s memorable and legendary comic moments. He passed away in 2017. Prince, who allegedly loved the sketch, died in 2016.
Murphy will star in Amazon’s lead role in the upcoming sequel ‘Coming 2 America’ on March 5.
