Eddie Murphy reveals his interruption of acting comes after the Razzie award for ‘Worst Actor Ever’: ‘I just took a break one year … six years go by’

His distinction as an actor is the lead role of an Oscar for best supporting nod to the worst actor ever Razzie award.

And Eddie Murphy revealed this week that the latter ‘award’ was the main reason why he took a longer break from the rig over the past decade.

The comedian, who turns 60 next month, will stop by the Marc Maron podcast at the WTF on Tuesday to discuss his new starring role in the sequel Coming 2 America, as well as to reflect on his film career.

“I made a lot of movies,” Murphy said of his time in the late stocks that saw him in Razzie-award-winning penguins like Norbit and Meet Dave.

“I was like, ‘This is not nice. They give me Razzies … ‘Motherf gave me the worst actor Razzie ever. [So I thought], “Maybe it’s time to take a breather,” he continues.

‘I just took a break for a year, and suddenly six years go by, and I sit on the couch and can sit on the couch and not get off, but I do not want the last bunch s ** t them see me do [to be] bulls ** t, ‘the Nutty Professor star later added.

‘The plan was to go do Dolemite, Saturday Night Live, Coming 2 America and then get up and watch how I felt about it.

‘Then they will at least know that I am [still] funny, ‘Eddie added.

After Murphy’s incredible success in the 90’s and early 2000’s with films such as The Nutty Professor, Dr. Dolittle, Bowfinger and others, he made a series of box office copies and made critical mistakes such as The Adventures of Pluto Nash, I Spy and Showtime, all released in 2002.

He later “won” three Razzies – all in different stage categories – for the cheap Nutty Professor knockoff Norbit in 2007.

After a few more bombings, including Meet Dave in 2008 and Imagine That, Murphy a year later became the ‘leading’ worst actor of the Decade Razzie Award.

It cannot be overlooked, however, that in the midst of all this recognition, Eddie received an Oscar nomination for his excellent and theatrical supporting performance in Dreamgirls of 2006.

Yet the years between 2010 and 2020 saw only a handful of original lead roles in the SNL joke, including the 2011 Tower Heist, Mr. Church and 2016 of Dolemite Is My Name, for which he was nominated for a Golden Globe.

This year, of course, Eddie played one of his esteemed roles; that of Prince Akeem from 1988’s Coming To America, in the Amazon Prime sequel Coming 2 America.

And the sequels will still come for the star, as his two upcoming projects are Beverly Hills Cop 4, as well as Triplets, which will see him join forces with Danny DeVito and Arnold Schwarzenegger after their hit collaboration twins in 1988.
