A series of aftershocks across the country followed. A 5.0 magnitude aftershock struck 27 kilometers southwest of Nueve de Julio, about 1,000 km (620 miles) east of the first earthquake and nearly 20 minutes later.
Then came an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.9 in the same area as the first, followed by an aftershock with a magnitude of 5.3.
The earthquake with a magnitude of 4.9, 5.0 and 5.3 is considered aftershocks because it is smaller than the main earthquake and in the same area.
According to the Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) at present, there is currently no tsunami threat.
San Juan Gov. Sergio Uñac urged people to remain calm after the quake struck.
“Let us apply all the measures we have learned to prevent incidents, while committing ourselves to knowing the impact of the (earthquake) to cooperate in everything necessary,” he tweeted.
Uñac added that the province is working with civilian and security forces to respond, as well as with municipalities to respond to ‘to look after them’.
In its preliminary statement, the PTWC recorded the depth of the earthquake at about 20 kilometers (12.43 miles).
It was a “strong” earthquake, CNN and Espanol reporter Agostina Montaño said in San Juan, adding that everything had fallen off the shelves of his home.
It’s an evolving story, even more so.
