Early results Suggest that Pfizer vaccine will work against coronavirus mutations

The COVID-19 vaccine from pharmaceutical companies Pfizer and BioNTech appears to be effective against 16 different mutations of the coronavirus, according to a study that has not yet been reviewed by peers.

As Reuters reports, the study by researchers from Pfizer and the medical branch of the University of Texas suggests that the vaccine does not need to be adapted to work against a seemingly more contagious variant of the coronavirus that originates in the UK do not have.

The British variant, known as B117, was recently detected in the United States among people who did not travel to the United Kingdom, suggesting that the community had spread.

Viral mutations are a typical occurrence and there is no indication that COVID-19 has been made more dangerous so far than it already is. And while vaccines can be adapted to address new variations, there is still no sign needed.

“We’ve now tested 16 different mutations, and none of them have had a significant impact. That’s the good news,” Pfizer scientist Phil Dormitzer said Thursday. “That doesn’t mean the 17th.”
