Nick Sirianni’s first coaching staff in Philadelphia is still coming together.
The Eagles reached an agreement Monday morning to make former Chargers attacking coordinator Shane Steichen their new OC, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Steichen, 35, was one of only two known candidates for the job, along with Denver RBs coach Curtis Modkins.
Like defense coordinator Jonathan Gannon, Steichen has close ties to Sirianni. The two worked with the Chargers from 2014-’17.
If there were any questions about the Eagles’ allowing Sirianni to put together his own coaching staff, it was answered over the past few days. Every coach we’ve heard added to these staff has worked with Sirianni before. This is important because the Eagles Doug Pederson really helped put his first staff together five years ago. Pederson worked in two places, but under the same head coach, so he did not have the means to put together a top staff like Sirianni.
Sirianni and Steichen were both position coaches at the Chargers when Sirianni left to be Frank Reich’s OC in Indianapolis in 2018. After that, Steichen continued at the Chargers and eventually rose to the level of full-time offensive coordinator.
But Anthony Lynn was fired and Brandon Staley got the job in LA, so Steichen was available.
While Steichen became the interim OC in 2019, he won the title full-time in 2020. Under Lynn, Steichen and QBs coach Pep Hamilton, Justin Herbert, the first round, had a rookie season. The Chargers were the No. 9 offense in the NFL, averaging 382.1 yards per game, and the No. 6 offense.
Steichen replaced Sirianni in 2016 as the Chargers’ quarterback coach when Mike McCoy’s staff was reshuffled. Sirianni has coached receivers his last two years with the Chargers.
Earlier in the off-season, Steichen sparked interest from the Seahawks about their offensive coordinating work and he was reportedly also a candidate to stay in LA. But now he’s coming to Philly to form an attacking coaching staff with Sirianni and the new pace coordinator Kevin Patullo, who hails from Indianapolis.
Here is a history of Steichen’s coaching career:
2010: Louisville, Offensive Assistant
2011-12: Loaders, Defense Assistant
2013: Browns, Offensive Quality Control
2014-15: loaders, offensive quality control
2016-19: Chargers, Quarterbacks
2019: Chargers, Interim Offensive Coordinator
2020: Chargers, Offensive Coordinator
2021: Eagles, Offensive Coordinator
