The Washington team has released quarterback Dwayne Haskins, the team announced Monday. “This afternoon I met Dwayne and told him we were going to release him,” coach Ron Rivera said in a statement Monday. “I told him I think it benefits both parties that we go separately. We want to thank Dwayne for his contributions over the past two seasons and wish him well.” The no. 15 pick in the 2019 NFL draft ended in favor of Taylor Heinicke in the Panthers’ 20-13 loss on Sunday after throwing two interceptions. This past Tuesday, Haskins apologized after it appeared on social media that the quarterback showed off without a mask and in the vicinity of a maskless woman during a party. Washington was in contact with the NFL and handled it internally, a source at the time told Ben Standig, The Athletic. “I spoke to Coach Rivera yesterday and took full responsibility for endangering the team,” Haskins tweeted Tuesday. “It was irresponsible and immature of me and I accept responsibility for my actions.” Haskins, who started seven games in his rookie campaign for 2019, started the first four games of the 2020 season before being selected in favor of Kyle Allen. Haskins was 89 of 146 with four touchdowns, three interceptions and 939 passing yards during that period. Earlier Monday, Rivera Heinicke was named as the starter for Washington’s Week 17 game on Sunday night against the Philadelphia Eagles, who will decide the NFC East Division winner. This is an evolving story. More to come.
