Driver killed, 12-year-old girl rescued from a partially underwater car in Tampa dam, officials say

TAMPA, Fla. The driver of a partially underwater car in a dam has died, Tampa police said. A child, who was also in the car, was rescued.

According to Tampa Fire Rescue, a vehicle carrying a 38-year-old woman and a 12-year-old girl overturned in a pond at Lauren Vista and K-Bar Ranch Parkway in New Tampa.

Officials said the child was snatched from the vehicle, but the driver was trapped and died at the scene.

Tampa Police and Tampa Fire Rescue are assisting with the rescue.

Officials say firefighters immediately entered the water in an attempt to rescue the driver.

“They worked tirelessly for several minutes until it became clear that they would not be able to remove her until the vehicle was taken out of the water.”

Officials say the driver was under water for almost an hour before the car could be removed. They also said the vehicle was deeper in the dam underwater when they tried to rescue the driver.

Police are now investigating.
