Broncos general manager George Paton said Thursday that Drew Lock has the qualities of a franchise quarterback, adding that he likes the track that Lock is on. That doesn’t mean Lock will start for the Broncos in 2021.
Indeed, the Broncos are going to let Lock earn the job.
The team expects to add competition for Lock on the position, which could potentially use the ninth overall pick on a quarterback.
“Obviously we’re always trying to bring in players in all positions that can boost the competition, and the quarterbacks need not be any different,” Broncos coach Vic Fangio told the team’s website via Swanon. ‘Until we come or until Drew is the next big back player, like the ones the Denver franchise has been used to in recent years or certain teams in the league. . . is used to. We are always going to try to bring in competition. But I have confidence that Drew can continue to improve. ”
Lock started 13 games in 2020 and his 75.4 passer score finished 32nd ahead of only Dwayne Haskins, Carson Wentz and Sam Darnold. Haskins and Wentz are no longer with the teams they played for in 2020, and the Jets can trade Darnold.
Lock’s 15 interceptions are tied for the lead in the league.
This has certainly left the Broncos in doubt that Lock will make the 42nd overall pick in 2019. But Lock did not waste time getting back to work and trying to prove the team right.
“I am confident that Drew will continue to improve,” Fangio said. ‘Drew’s have had a good off-season so far. There is not much you can do, but he works hard on his own, comes here and gets workouts, and I know he does a lot at home alone and watches video himself. He has a good setup there. And he is doing everything and more he can to improve, even in February and now in March. ”
