Drew Brees Saints Save $ 24 Million on Restructuring

Drew Brees wants to give the New Orleans Saints another win before calling it a career. Brees has reportedly agreed to restructure the final year of his contract with the team, a move that will save the Saints $ 24 million, according to Jason Fitzgerald of Over The Cap.

Prior to the 2020 NFL season, Brees signed a $ 50 million two-year deal with the Saints. Under the deal, Brees would earn $ 25 million each season. But while Brees retired, he reportedly decided to restructure his 2021 salary to just over $ 1 million.

The move is another indication that Brees is ready to step away from football. Under his previous deal, Brees would be considered a $ 36 million cap against the team. By drastically lowering his salary, Brees’ capital can now work out to $ 12 million.

How? As currently produced, Brees’ cap hit is actually $ 22 million. But if Brees stays on the Saints’ active list until June 2, the team could place him on the retired list and split the figure.

This is a generous gesture from Brees, though it will not completely save the Saints from salary cap issues. According to Over The Cap, the team, according to Brees ‘forecast, will exceed about $ 78 million, even after Brees’ restructuring.

The team will have to think of some more creative solutions to get the situation under control.

Rumors that Drew Brees is retiring from the NFL

Although Brees has not yet officially retired, some believe it will come. Ahead of the team’s playoff game against the Chicago Bears, it was reported that Brees would retire as soon as the Saints run ended. While the team defeated the Bears, the Saints lost to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers the following week. Fear has remained true to his plans since his loss mother.

If it is, Brees will not leave football completely behind. Brees apparently has an agreement to join NBC as a commentator. There are even rumors that he may succeed Cris Collinsworth in the ‘Sunday Night Football’ stand.
