The end of the road may be near for Drew Brees.

Ahead of the New Orleans Saints ‘divisional game with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer announced Sunday that the future quarterback of the Hall of Fame plans to retire after the team’s playoffs:

Brees turned 42 on Friday, so his retirement will not be a surprise if it does happen. That the 13-time Pro Bowler has already decided, however, is a bit unexpected.

The Saints have their starting quarters until the 2021 season, and he will almost count $ 36.2 million against the salary cap, due in part to a $ 25 million salary and a $ 5.8 million bonus.

Brees’ performance has dropped slightly this season compared to recent years. He threw for 2,942 yards, 24 touchdowns and six interceptions. His 245.2 yards per game was the lowest of his Saints tenure, dating back to 2006.

The broken ribs and collapsed lung he has suffered perhaps also plays into his decision.

Brees now have the opportunity to ride into the sunset like John Elway and Peyton Manning, who won a Super Bowl before bowing. He would also give the Saints some time to draw up a succession plan.

Taysom Hill took most of the screenshots when Brees was injured, and unlike Jameis Winston, he is already under contract for next year. Hill’s production (88-of-121, 928 yards, four touchdowns, two interceptions) still casts doubt on his suitability in the starting lineup.

If the Saints fall short of a Super Bowl title, Brees might be convinced to give it another go. But fans can better enjoy the legendary signal caller while they still can.
