Drew Barrymore shares her ’empathy’ for Britney Spears and talks about her own time in a psychiatric ward

Drew Barrymore expresses their support for Britney Spears and Paris Hilton amid new attention to how the former party girls were treated in their youth.

Barrymore has been in the public eye since she was a child and currently presents her own talk show. During a recent appearance in Howard Stern’s show, the star discussed her own wild days that led to a stay in a psychiatric ward when she was 13 years old.

The host compared her situation to that of Spears, who asked the host to note that she had ‘so much empathy’ for people in her position.

‘Paris Hilton appeared on this show and she was institutionalized by her mother and, you know, you think like Britney and Paris, and I thought so myself. I’m sure people are watching it and thinking, ‘These party girls, these privileges, how dare they have feelings about this? They put themselves out there, they asked for it – it’s an honest game, ‘and I’m just going to say,’ They’re people. They’re just people, ‘and I have a lot of empathy,’ the star explained.

Stern had earlier shared his support for Spears, as the public still discussed the pop star’s life and treatment in the past in the public eye after the release of the ‘Framing Britney Spears’ documentary and her conservatism battle with her father, Jamie Spears. Hilton, meanwhile, made headlines earlier this year when she shared her experience of an abusive boarding school she attended when she was young.

Barrymore also started about her time in a psychiatric ward after her mother became desperate to raise her when she was 13 years old.

“My mother put me in a place that was like a complete psychiatric ward. I laughed like Malibu for 30 days beforehand. They talked about things that scared me. I was just like … A Little spa vacation for 30 days in Malibu was the opposite of the experience I had, “she explained.” I was at a place called Van Nuys Psychiatric for a year and a half and you could not crawl around there. If you did, you would be thrown into the stuffed room, or put in the straps and tied up. “

DREW BARRYMORE SHARES SHE NEVER HAS PLASTIC OPERATIONS: ‘I AM A VERY ADDICTIVE PERSON’

Barrymore said her time to get stuck in that spot was marked by constant rebellion, and she took the lead from punk rockers like Wendy O. Williams of the Plasmatics, whom she idolized.

“I would channel my inner riot girl,” she said, noting that she and her friends would start mini-revolutions against the staff.

“It was like a half child facility and a half old person, and when I picked up these young girls, the woman in the walker would pass by. It was hilarious,” she adds.

Although she outraged her mother for putting herself there as an adult and mother of two at the time, she understands why her mother was at the end of her rope and admits that she was ‘out of control’.

“I think she created a monster and she did not know what to do with the monster,” the star admitted. “It was her last gasp, and I was really out of control, and I forgive her for making that choice. She probably felt like she had nowhere to go.”

Stern asked her if she had a good relationship with her mother today, to which the star remarked that they communicate all the time.

“I’m really glad there’s healing,” she concluded.
