Here’s a look at Drake’s unprecedented week with ‘What’s Next’, the 1117th no. 1 in the Hot 100s archives, and his two other new entries. The song is the 49th single to debut at number 1 (and the second in a row, following Rodrigo’s “License”).
Streams, airplay and sales: “What’s Next” opens with 49.1 million US streams and 19,000 downloads sold in the week ending March 11, according to MRC Data. In the week ending March 14, it also broadcast 11.9 million audience impressions on radio.
“Wants and Needs” started with 41.5 million streams, sold 17,000 and 2.1 million in the audience, while “Lemon Pepper Freestyle” started with 32.1 million streams, sold 15,000 and reached 869,000 in radio.
As on the Hot 100, the tracks start at number 1, 2 and 3 respectively on the Streaming Songs chart, where Drake increases his lead for most no. 1s (10) and top 10s (51). When selling digital songs, they debuted at number 3, 4 and 5, respectively.
Drake’s record at Number 1, 2 & 3 / Top celebrates all debuts: Drake is the first artist to perform at no. 1, 2 and 3 debuted on the Hot 100, while the arrival of Silk Sonic’s “Leave the Door Open” makes its first chart this week with four simultaneous debuts at the top four.
Previously, songs debuted three times simultaneously at number 1 and 2 on the Hot 100, and never by the same artist. Recently, Ariana Grande’s “Positions” and Luke Combs’ “Forever After All” launched at number 1 and 2 respectively on the chart of November 7, 2020. Before that, Adele’s “Hello” at number 1 and Bieber’s “Sorry “it on 14 November 2015 at no. 2 starts, while “This Is the Night” by Clay Aiken and “Flying Without Wings” by Ruben Studdard are entered at numbers 1 and 2 respectively (turning their rounds this season on American Idol), on 28 June 2003.
Beatles, Ariana & Drake: Drake, meanwhile, joins The Beatles and Ariana Grande as the only performances ever to be simultaneously at No. 1, 2 and 3 on the Hot 100. He is thus the first solo man to deserve the honor.
Grande achieved the feat with ‘7 Rings’, ‘Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I’m Bored’ and ‘Thank You, Next’ on the Hot 100 of February 23, 2019. In 55 years there has never been such a triple incident no point, as The Beatles did it for five weeks in 1964, on March 14, 21 and 28 and April 4 and 25, with ‘Can’t Buy Me Love’, ‘Twist and Shout’ and ‘Do You Want to Know a Secret ‘, “respectively, on the last of those dates; On April 4, 1964, the group claimed the top five.
Drake’s 8th no. 1: Drake picks up his eighth Hot 100 no. 1 with ‘What’s Next’.

With his three most recent appearances, Drake also leaves his record total of up to 30 career debuts in the Hot 100’s top 10.
Most weeks at number 1 among solo men: Drake increases his mark for most weeks at number 1 on the Hot 100 among solo men to 51. Usher is second with 47.

Drake ups record to 45 top ten: Drake packed his record total at 45 Hot 100 top 10s, thanks to “What’s Next”, “Wants and Needs” and “Lemon Pepper Freestyle.” Madonna ranks second with 38 top 10s, followed by The Beatles with 34.
Drake further extends his records to 119 top 40 Hot 100 hits and 231 entries overall.
Lil Baby, Ross top 10: With “Wants and Needs” Lil Baby adds his sixth Hot 100 top 10.
Thanks to ‘Lemon Pepper Freestyle’, Rick Ross achieved his second Hot 100 top 10 and highest position, after his co-turn on Drake’s ‘Money in the Grave’ (No. 7, 2019). Ross earned his 50th overall Hot 100 entry, dating back to his first in 2006.
Drake expands R & B / hip-hop number 1: “What’s Next” simultaneously starts at number 1 on the multi-metric Hot R & B / Hip-Hop Songs chart, where Drake achieves its 22nd leader. Aretha Franklin and Stevie Wonder share the second most number 1 in history (20 each).
The track also starts at the top of the multi-metric Hot Rap Songs chart, where it is also Drake’s 22nd number 1.
Silk Sonic’s “Leave the Door Open” is rounded out at number 4 from four simultaneous Hot 100 debuts. The song of the duo of Bruno Mars and Anderson. Paak started with 23.5 million diaper impressions, 23.2 million streams and 27,000 were sold, as it peaked at number 2 on Digital Song Sales, no. 4 on Streaming Songs and no. 31 appeared on Radio Songs.
The collab, presented on the Hot 100 as by Silk Sonic (Bruno Mars & Anderson .Paak), contributes to the history of both artists, becoming the 17th top-10 of Mars and the first of Anderson. Nr. 89 in February 2020 as seen on Eminem’s “Lock It Up”).
“Door” debuts at number 1 on the multi-metric Hot R&B Songs chart, where it is the third leader of Mars and Anderson .Pack the first.
Olivia Rodrigo’s “Driver’s License” drops to number 5 after spending the first eight weeks on the Hot 100 at number 1. Yet it rose 2-1 on Radio Songs (74.3 million, up 1%). It falls 4-9 on Streaming Songs (17.3 million, 12% lower) and 5-11 on Digital Song Sales (7,000, 23% less).
‘License’, Rodrigo’s first Radio Songs entry, is number 1 in his eighth week on the charts. It completes the fastest coronation in nearly two years, since Jonas Brothers’ “Sucker” took the top spot in the seventh week in April 2019. Among the first Radio Songs entries (in main roles) of the act, ‘License’ is the fastest run No. 1 since Meghan Trainor’s “All About That Bass” (Seven Weeks, 2014).
Cardi B’s “Up” drops to number 6 of the no. 2 Hot 100 highlight as he wins Best Airplay Gainer Award (32.4 million, 17% higher), and The Weeknd “Save Your Tears” from The Weeknd 6-7, after reaching number 4, and his “Blinding Lights” falls 3-8, after spending four weeks at No. 1 last April-May. ‘Lights’ adds a record extension of the 53rd week in the top 10, a week after becoming the first song in history to be a year in the region.
Ariana Grande’s “34 + 35” slipped 4-9 on the Hot 100, after reaching No. 2, and 24kGoldn’s “Mood,” with Iann Dior, backtracks 7-10, after eight non-consecutive weeks at No. 1 in October to mid-January. The latter leads the multi-metric Hot Rock & Alternative Songs and Hot Alternative Songs charts for a 28th week each.
