RuPaul’s Drag Race followed all sorts of new safety protocols with the premiere of season 13: the judges not only stayed six feet apart, but Mama Ru socially distanced herself from more than half of the cast. Or done his?
As previously reported, Friday’s premiere kicked off with six lip-sync fights, forcing all 13 contestants to fight for a spot in the competition, moments after entering the workroom. But before we go to the second game-changing turn of the night, let’s see how everyone fared on the main stage:
KANDY MUSE vs. JOEY JAY | This first game did not surprise anyone – at least no one watched the video that VH1 released earlier this week. New York resident Kandy Muse was the first to enter the study, dressed in denim from top to toe (with a denim tree case that naturally fits). She was followed by Arizona Queen Joey Jay, the self-described ‘dumbest bitch you will ever meet’. After swapping the first two contestants of Season 13 for awkward pleasures, they changed the main stage for the first of six lip-sync fights. Both the queens turned it out, but only Kandy was sent to safety, while Joey was sent … well, I’ll get to that soon.
DENALI versus LALA RI | “Icy, spicy and a little dark,” Denali literally turned into the study (those poor floors!) And immediately exclaimed herself as a gold medal bitch. ‘And the Windy City queen was not the least impressed with her competition, Atlanta’s LaLa Ri, who described her to the judges as’ an Olive Garden pasta with Popeyes chicken tenders on the side to dazzle. ‘ For the record, anyone who watches chicken tenders and thinks “blinding blinding” is immediately OK in my book, so I was excited – if not just a little surprised – to see how she beats Denali in a lip with the Pussycat Dolls’ ‘When I’m Growing Up.’ eradication of the milk!)
SYMONE teen TAMISHA IMAN | Round three is an “ebony magician” Symone against the “sassy and sweet” Tamisha Iman, the last of whom was cast in season 12 before she was diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer. The extreme Jasmine Masters atmosphere she provided with that suit was simply a bonus.
GOTTMIK vs. THE QUEEN OF UTICA | Gottmik has turned all eyes this season, and not just because the artist’s famous make-up has beaten such famous cups as Cindy Crawford, Heidi Klum and Paris Hilton. “I’m a transgender man,” Gottmik explained as he entered the study. ‘So … a girl born, turned into a guy, dressed like a girl for money – a lot that. Once Lindsay Lohan’s “Rumors” started shooting on the main stage (YES, by the way!), Gottmik quickly made work of Utica Queen, who accurately described herself as a supermodel who eats booger and as one of those * deep breaths * crazy waving inflatable tubes you see at car dealers.
ROSE to OLIVIA LUX | We can all agree that Rosé – who sings with the brilliant Jan 12 in the girl group Stephanie’s Child – gave herself the death kiss by saying complacently: “I usually win.” (It was also an ironic statement, as she boasted of being on The voice and America’s Got Talent… neither of the two she won.) Despite being born at the intersection of “White Avenue and Fashion Boulevard”, Rosé was by her relative beginner Olivia Lux, who felt her oats during Elle King’s “Ex’s and Oh’s” . The energy! The Raw Veal! It was all very good. Well, not for Rosé.
TINA BURNER vs. KAHMORA HALL against ELLIOTT WITH 2 TS | Because this ridiculous premiere was basically pornography Drag Race fans, it only made sense to end it with a three-way. The “old” New York Queen Tina Burner, the glorious shady Kahmora Hall – yes, season 12 winner Jaida Essence Hall is her big sister! and Elliott With 2 Ts (better known as ‘A Housewife with a Secret’) released it on ‘Lady Marmalade’, easily the best song choice in an evening full of amazing song choices. (Can you imagine how wild people are going to hang out for this? Actually, I do not even want to think about it. It’s way too depressing.) Elliott turned it around. out, and Kahmora looked good in the original Bob Mackie, but Tina absolutely swallowed them with her stage presence and sent her through to continue her season 13 journey.
While the members of ‘Team Talent’ were beating themselves on the back, the queens who lost their lip corpses were all treated under a wall of pork chops, from Dahlia Sin and Miss Vanjie to the OG herself. the second big gag of the evening. “Everything is not lost,” Ru announced. ‘You all have a chance to return to the competition. But first you have to give the policeman to one of your fellow queens. Let the voting begin! ”
