Dr. Fauci says this is what’s disturbing ‘about one new COVID voltage

Just when you think COVID can no longer worry us, it gives it another strain to continue to destroy the world. Another variant of the virus, first identified in South Africa, raises concerns just behind the British tribe, which is now in ten countries in the US. Both variants appear to be more transmissible, making it easier for the virus to spread faster. Now, Anthony Fauci, Managing Director, Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), warns of another “disturbing” problem that the South African tribe could present. To see what Fauci has to say about the tribe, read on, and for more information on the South African tribe, check out Dr. Fauci Just Issued This Warning About Another New COVID Strain.

Antibody treatments may not work against the South African tribe.

One of the most useful tools for combating COVID is the monoclonal antibody treatments used to help patients with severe COVID. However, Fauci said the treatment was unlikely to be effective against the South African tribe COVID. According to CNBC, Fauci, after talks with health experts in South Africa, said that early data indicated that there was’ more of a threat that the strain could evade some of the protection that antibody treatments offer patients.

“It could have a bit of an effect on the protection of the monoclonal antibodies and maybe even for the vaccine. We do not know,” Fauci said during a Q&A for the Schmidt Futures’ Forum on Preparedness on January 12.

Antibody treatments are aimed at a specific component of the virus that may have mutated the strain.

During a Dec. 30 conversation with Gov. Gavin Newsom, Fauci explained that antibody treatments work against a ‘very specific component of the virus’, called the ear protein. Thus, turning this component into a mutation can make the treatment less potent.

On the other hand, “when you are vaccinated, the immune response you produce … works against many different parts of the virus,” Fauci said. This suggests that the vaccines are likely to work against these strains. For more news on vaccines, check if you are using this OTC medicine, you must stop before you get the vaccine.

Fauci says we need to take the tension seriously.

“People ask me, ‘Are you worried about that?’ It’s not the kind of thing I worry about, but it’s the kind of thing I take very seriously, ‘Fauci said during the forum.

In a discussion on the British tribe with NPR on January 7, Fauci said the new tribe “is serious enough to pay attention to it. We can not just blow it off.” He added: “You should always be concerned if you see mutations that are functional.” And subscribe to our daily newsletter for more up-to-date COVID news delivered directly to your inbox.

One antibody treatment company is not sure if their product will work against South African stress.

On January 12, Eli Lilly Chairman and CEO Dave Ricks told CNBC the company expects their monoclonal antibody treatment to be effective in treating the British COVID strain, but he is less confident about the South African strain.

“The South African variant … is the one that is of concern. It has more dramatic mutations for the peak protein, which is the target” for the treatment of antibodies, Ricks said. “Theoretically, it could evade our medicine.” And for more information on the British variant, visit Dr. Fauci Just This Scary Prediction About the UK COVID Strain.

The South African tribe is not yet in the USA.

The Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) has not identified any cases of the South African COVID strain in the US. However, as of January 11, at least 72 cases of the British tribe have been reported. To see what declares the British tribe is in, check out The New COVID Strain Is Now in These 10 States.
