Bittered by critical comments from some top Republicans, outgoing President Donald Trump is considering launching a new third party, The Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday.
Trump, with only a few hours left in his presidency, wants to call it the ‘Patriot Party’, reports The Journal, citing sources familiar with the matter.
The report comes after Senator Mitch McConnell, the top Republican in the U.S. Senate, delivered a speech Tuesday in which he accused Trump of the riot at the U.S. Capitol this month.
“The crowd lied,” he said. “They were provoked by the president and other powerful people.”
It is unclear whether the effort would involve the recruitment and management of candidates or serve as a media and merchandise empire for the former president.
In 1968, George Wallace, Alabama’s far-right segregation governor, won five states while being nominated as an Independent of the American Independent Party. No third-party candidate has since won a federal election in the country, although a number of independents have been elected to Congress.
