Dolly Parton statue on display at Tennessee Capitol

A statue of Dolly Parton can be erected on the site of the Tennessee Capitol.

State Representative John Mark Windle proposed such a statue on the property in recognition of the land icon’s contributions to the state.

The creation and installation of the statue would be funded by ‘non-governmental resources’ such as ‘gifts, grants and other donations’, which would be placed in a separate account that would raise money for the development and implementation of the plan, according to Windle ‘s bill. He proposes a similar plan for the maintenance of the statue after its installation.

Furthermore, the artwork will be commissioned and ‘they will ask the public and other interested parties for input into the development of the plan, including proposed design concepts for the statue.’

In June, an online request was submitted indicating that a statue of Parton (74) replaced those dedicated to the Confederate officers.

“Tennessee is littered with statues commemorating Confederate officers,” the petition reads. “History should not be forgotten, but we do not have to glorify those who do not deserve our praise. Let us rather honor a true Tennessee hero, Dolly Parton.”
