DOJ official says there is evidence to charge riot in the assault of the American Capitol: ’60 minutes’

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Federal investigators have found evidence that will likely enable the government to file charges against some of those involved in the deadly attack on the U.S. Capitol on January 6, a Justice Department official said Sunday told the “60 minutes” of CBS. .

“I believe the facts support the charges,” said Columbia District Attorney Michael Sherwin. “I think as we move forward, more facts will support that.”

Hundreds of supporters of then-President Donald Trump stormed the Capitol in a failed attempt to stop Congress from certifying Democrat Joe Biden’s victory in the presidential election, leaving lawmakers fleeing and leaving five dead.

The Department of Justice has already filed cases against 400 suspects involved in the assault, but no one has yet been charged with the crime that they violently oppose the power of the U.S. government.

Since announcing a task force to investigate the rioters six days after the attack, Sherwin has said he will continue on a charge of sedition. So far, most who have been arrested in connection with the riot are charged with entering or assaulting officials, with a smaller number charged with conspiracy to obstruct Congress.
