Dogs’ barking leads to rescue of owners trapped in an avalanche

Two people have been rescued from an avalanche in Switzerland after their dogs barked wildly for help, officials said.

The couple got stuck around 3pm on Saturday while on a hiking trail in the Avers Valley near the Italian border, the air ambulance service said.

“Their dogs, who were not buried by the snow masses, drew attention to themselves by barking loudly,” officials said Sunday.

“The dogs caught the attention of a group of snow walkers who were in the same valley for a while, but did not see the avalanche.”

Emergency teams were called and were able to reach the pair 15 to 20 minutes later.

One of the hikers was completely buried while the others’ hands were visible, officials said.
