DINWIDDIE COUNTY, Va. Firefighters admit to two dogs that they saved the life of a ten-year-old boy during the trailer fire in Dinwiddie County.
“Those two dogs are heroes,” said Dennis Hale, fire chief of Dinwiddie.
Hale says the call came after the dispatch from Dinwiddie County as a completely inflamed fire with a child inside.
Firefighters in Dinwiddie County did not think of the fire while on their way to the trailer.
“The whole time you respond, you know the comments are, ‘there’s a kid in the dorm,'” Hale said.
Upon arrival, firefighters reported seeing flames coming from the front of the trailer.
But the child who was in the house escaped, thanks to two pale pit bulls.
The boy ran across the street to his neighbors’ house and told Ray Dawson that he was asleep.
“He was just as filthy as he could be, just raised his nose, all over his face, his hands,” Dawson said. “He said his dogs got in there and started jumping on him and waking him up.”
“He was sleeping and his two dogs, came into his room and started jumping up and down and pawed at him on his chest and it woke him up,” Hale added.
Smoke and flames face, the boy escapes throwing his window.
“He kept his composure and obviously knew the fire would have been between him and his normal front door. He knew he would go out a different way. He did exactly what he was supposed to do,” Hale said.
The two pit bulls did not get it right.
“They all loved those dogs,” Dawson said. “They saved the boy, saved him.”
“They both basically died heroes,” Hale added.
The ten-year-old was taken to the VCU Medical Center for smoke inhalation. He is expected to recover.
The Red Cross was summoned and helped the family with a temporary residence.
