Dr Anthony Fauci says two masks are better than one.
“It just makes sense that it’s likely to be more effective,” Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, told NBC’s Today Show this week. “That’s why you see people wearing double masks or a version of an N95.”
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has not issued official guidelines on dual masking. It first pleaded on April 3 last year to wear face masks to help prevent the carrier from spreading coronavirus, but since then, health workers say it also prevents the carrier from becoming infected.
“A mask is like an obstacle course for particles to get through,” Linsey Marr, a virus transmission expert and a professor of civil and environmental engineering at Virginia Tech, told AARP. A second mask “increases the chance that the particle will be trapped before it passes through.”
As of Tuesday, 99.9 million people worldwide had contracted COVID-19 and more than 2.1 million people had died. According to data collected by Johns Hopkins University, there were 25.3 million cases and 421,890 deaths in the US.
Fauci recently said it expects more people to be able to get vaccinated by April to prevent the spread of COVID-19. “I would expect that by the time we arrive in April, we will be the open season for vaccines,” Fauci told NPR. ‘Everyone can get a vaccine. So I think if we get vaccinated between 70% and 85% of the population and get a good herd immunity, I can start approaching some form of normality by autumn. ‘

U.S. President Joe Biden last week signed a mask mandate for all federal workers and anyone with federal property. According to the mandate, they must “all wear masks, maintain physical distance and observe other public health measures, as set out in CDC guidelines.”
Fauci told NPR: ‘We want to bring it to 1 million vaccinations a day. The idea of everyone having at least 100 days – at least – to wear a mask. Everyone is uniform, so we have no differences between people who follow public health measures and others. “
