Doctor says Navalny could die ‘at any moment’

Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny could “die at any moment” due to progressive kidney failure caused by his ongoing hunger strike, a Russian doctor said on Sunday.

In a Facebook report first reported by The Associated Press, Yaroslav Ashikhmin wrote that the test results provided by Navalny’s family indicate serious problems with the Russian political figure, including the increased potassium levels.

“A patient with this level of potassium should be observed in intensive care as fatal arrhythmias can develop at any time. Death by cardiac arrest. The publication is being coordinated with the family members of Alexey Navalny,” the report reads.

“Our patient could die at any moment,” he continued.

Navalny has remained in prison since returning to Russia earlier this year, and launched a hunger strike a few weeks ago over complaints about access to medical care at the facility. He and his lawyers claim he has no or infrequent access to a jail as he has sought treatment for herniated discs.
