BUENOS AIRES (Sputnik) – A Mexican doctor who received the Pfizer vaccine against the COVID-19 coronavirus has been admitted to an intensive care unit with seizures, breathing problems and possible encephalomyelitis, the country’s health ministry said on Saturday.

‘The 32-year-old doctor who received the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine was admitted to the intensive care unit […] after rash, convulsions, muscle weakness and breathing problems within half an hour after vaccination, “the ministry said.

The cause of the adverse reaction, which occurred while the doctor was still within the area of observation after his vaccination, is currently being investigated.

According to the ministry, the preliminary diagnosis is encephalomyelitis.

“The doctor is being observed and treated by specialists in critical medicine to reduce the inflammation of the brain. Intensive specialized treatment based on steroids and anticonvulsants will continue to reduce the risk of consequences,” the health ministry said.

The patient is said to have a history of allergic reactions to other medications, such as Trimethoprim with sulfamethoxazole, which can cause severe symptoms, especially skin rash, angioedema and anaphylactic reaction, or even death.

The Mexican Ministry of Health stated in a statement that, according to current scientific data on the Pfizer and BioNTech vaccine, “no one has previously developed encephalitis after administering the vaccine.”
