The next big update of iPhones around the world will almost certainly be called iOS 15, and we expect to hear all about it during the WWDC 2021 conference which is expected to take place in June this year.
Little is known about iOS 15, but a number of rumors have suggested that your iPhone may download the latest software when it lands – and this differs from iOS 14 compatibility.
Every phone that could download iOS 13 was also compatible with the latest iOS 14 software that landed in 2020 before the iPhone 12 series was launched. iOS 14.4 is the latest upgrade, and it was made available before the end of January 2021.
But what’s the latest we know about iOS 15? We’ve looked at the biggest rumors so far to give you the best notice on whether your phone will be upgraded.
iPhone 6S, iPhone 6S Plus and iPhone SE (2016)
If you own the iPhone 6S, iPhone 6S Plus or the original iPhone SE, you probably will not upgrade to iOS 15. This is the hard truth, and although it has not been confirmed yet, we have heard it from at least two sources now .
The iOS 14 upgrade was available on these three devices, but that in itself was not expected, as many expected Apple to stop supporting the devices in 2020.
While not confirmed, it would make sense for Apple to drop the support for these older devices, as they will all be older than five years by the time iOS 15 lands and some are even older than that.
Switching to iOS 15 does not mean that your phone is useless, but if you are looking for the latest features and security updates, you may want to switch to a more modern Apple smartphone or an alternative.
iPad Air 2, iPad (2017) and iPad mini 4
It’s also likely that these three iPad models will not be able to accurately download iOS 15 or more of the company’s download software, which will likely be called iPadOS 15, when it lands.
We have not yet heard of any specific key sources, but it would make sense for the company to abandon the next generation of its devices from the iOS 15 update. So keep an eye out when the iOS 15 details land.
iPhone 7 and beyond
Do you own an iPhone 7 or an Apple smartphone that was released after 2017? It’s likely that you’re still supported by iOS 15 at the moment. There is currently no guarantee for and we will have to wait for the official confirmation from Apple before we know for sure.
All the leaks so far have suggested that iOS 15 will come on all devices older than the iPhone 7 series, but we tend to agree with those sources and hopefully this will be positive news for you.
