DMX may soon name a statue or a street after him in his hometown … but first, the city of Yonkers, NY welcomes the late rapper’s family to hold his memorial service there, if they so choose.
A source close to X’s family tells us that there will be a private and public memorial and that there will be a meeting on Monday to finalize possible plans, but mayor. Mike Spano tells TMZ … he’s in favor of the DMX family holding the memorial service at Yonkers Raceway, the city’s largest outdoor venue, and wants to help make it happen.
Spano says X’s hometown wants to ease the burden on his family, and the door is wide open to use the site of the horse racing, if they want to do so.
Yonkers Raceway has 7,500 seats, but according to state COVID guidelines, they will be limited to 20 percent of the number. Mayor Spanos says it’s appropriate for people to say goodbye to an icon like X in the city where he was raised.
A rep for the racetrack said they have not yet had any official requests to host a memorial and that there have been no major events since COVID-19 took place, but they are currently working at 25%.
As you know, DMX Died Friday after being hospitalized in a coma for a week … after that an overdose which cut off oxygen to its brain for about 30 minutes.
No matter where the family holds the memorial, we are told that Yonkers will honor DMX with a lasting gesture … Mayor Spanos says it could mean a statue like another famous Yonkers native, Ella Fitzgerald, or a mural or street names.
The mayor says, of course, that it will largely depend on what X’s family wants to do.
In short … Yonkers wants to make sure DMX’s memory lives on in the city so that the next generation can be inspired.
