Scottish DJ and producer SOPHIE has died after a sudden accident this morning (January 30).
The official statement from the artist team confirms the news NME. SOPHIE was 34.
“It is with great sadness that I must inform you that the musician and producer SOPHIE passed away this morning around 04:00 in Athens, where the artist lived, after a sudden accident,” the statement read.
At this moment, respect and privacy for the family is our priority. We also ask for respect for her fans and for handling the privacy of this news with sensitivity. ”

In a separate statement, SOPHIE’s family revealed the cause of her death and wrote: ‘Our tragic SOPHIE passed away this morning after a terrible accident. True to her spirituality, she climbed up to look at the full moon and accidentally slipped and fell. She will always be here with us.
“The family thanks everyone for their love and support and asks for privacy at this devastating time.”
Tributes are shared online in the aftermath of SOPHIE’s death. “Sophie was a star producer, a visionary, a reference,” Christine and the Queens tweeted as a tribute.

Born in Glasgow, SOPHIE released a number of singles and projects on labels such as Numbers during the 2010s. The artist’s debut album ‘OIL OF EVERY PEARL’S UN-INSIDES’ was released in 2018 via Transgressive and subsequently nominated for Best Dance / Electronic Album at the Grammys in 2019.
SOPHIE has also been a prominent part of the PC Music label and has worked with Madonna, Lady Gaga, Charli XCX, Vince Staples, Kim Petras, Arca and many more on music.
Last summer, SOPHIE launched new music at a live program, contributing to the soundtrack of Cyberpunk 2077 and launching a new project called Analemma with Juliana Huxtable.
