DJ and producer SOPHIE passed away, 34 years old – the music world pays tribute

Scottish DJ and producer SOPHIE has died after a sudden accident this morning (January 30).

The official statement from the artist team confirms the news NME. SOPHIE was 34.

“It is with great sadness that I must inform you that the musician and producer SOPHIE passed away this morning around 04:00 in Athens, where the artist lived, after a sudden accident,” the statement read.

At this moment, respect and privacy for the family is our priority. We also ask for respect for her fans and for handling the privacy of this news with sensitivity. ”

“SOPHIE was a pioneer of a new sound, one of the most influential artists in the past decade. Not only for ingenious production and creativity, but also for the message and visibility achieved. An icon of liberation. ”

In a separate statement, SOPHIE’s family revealed the cause of her death and wrote: ‘Our tragic SOPHIE passed away this morning after a terrible accident. True to her spirituality, she climbed up to look at the full moon and accidentally slipped and fell. She will always be here with us.

“The family thanks everyone for their love and support and asks for privacy at this devastating time.”

Tributes are shared online in the aftermath of SOPHIE’s death. “Sophie was a star producer, a visionary, a reference,” Christine and the Queens tweeted as a tribute.

‘She rebelled against the narrow, normative society by being an absolute triumph, both artist and woman. I can not believe she’s gone.

“We must respect and respect her memory and legacy. Cherish the pioneers. ”

Sam Smith added: “The world has lost an angel. A true visionary and icon of our generation. Your light will continue to inspire so much for many generations. I think of Sophie’s family and friends during this difficult time. ”

Activist Munroe Bergdorf also paid tribute to SOPHIE and wrote: ‘Our community has lost an icon, a pioneer and a visionary bright light. Heart broken. SOPHIE you will be missed.

‘Thank you for sharing your talent with us. I hope we will meet again one day. Rest in peace sister. ”

Shygirl, who shared her new SOPHIE-produced track ‘SLIME’ last year, added: ‘tell people you love them if you can.’

The Berlin label PAN also paid tribute and wrote: ‘Rest in Power you incredible human’, while Mogwai guitarist Stuart Braithwaite praised SOPHIE as an ‘enormous talent’ and that death was ‘terribly sad news’.

Born in Glasgow, SOPHIE released a number of singles and projects on labels such as Numbers during the 2010s. The artist’s debut album ‘OIL OF EVERY PEARL’S UN-INSIDES’ was released in 2018 via Transgressive and subsequently nominated for Best Dance / Electronic Album at the Grammys in 2019.

SOPHIE has also been a prominent part of the PC Music label and has worked with Madonna, Lady Gaga, Charli XCX, Vince Staples, Kim Petras, Arca and many more on music.

Last summer, SOPHIE launched new music at a live program, contributing to the soundtrack of Cyberpunk 2077 and launching a new project called Analemma with Juliana Huxtable.
