Disneyland to Re-Introduce Jungle Cruise Ride

(CNN) – Disney has announced that they are reconsidering a classic theme park attraction after years of criticism from fans.

The Jungle Cruise ride, where a clever captain transports guests along a waterway, is one of the last attractions at the theme parks that Walt Disney himself supervised. The ride is on both American theme parks – Disneyland in California and Walt Disney World in Florida.

However, Jungle Cruise has not yet aged as gracefully as other attractions. Although the ride is inspired by nature documentaries, one of the attractions along the river trail is a scene of ‘natives’ presenting themselves as wild, primitive and threatening.

In a press release, Disney confirms the upcoming refurbishment of the ride. Among the changes is a new animated captain character.

“As Imagineers, it is our responsibility to ensure that experiences we create and stories we share reflect the voices and perspectives of the world around us,” said Carmen Smith, executive director of creative development and inclusion at Walt Disney Imagineering. said a statement.

A “Jungle Cruise” movie starring Emily Blunt, Jesse Plemons and The Rock (as the skipper), will appear later in 2021. However, Disney has not confirmed whether there is an overlap between the film and the ride.

Jungle Cruise is one of the various Disney attractions that have been designated for distasteful images over the past few years.

The popular Splash Mountain stomp ride originally features characters from ‘Song of the South’, a story set in the south of the antebellum, whose creepy depictions of black people have mostly hidden it in the company’s vault. Last year, Disney announced that it would re-introduce the ride to include characters from ‘The Princess and the Frog’ from 2009, the first Disney movie starring the black princess.
The Pirates of the Caribbean ride, which inspired the film franchise of the same name, was also scrutinized for its animatronic scenes of the pirates selling female prisoners. In 2017, the main ‘wench’ figure was transformed into a female pirate, and the pirates are now auctioning off non-human loot.
