Thanks to a local content acquisition strategy and a partnership with the leading local telecommunications company, Disney + Hotstar has already gained 2.5 million subscribers in Indonesia, compared to just 850,000 for Netflix.

As global warming intensifies, Disney + Hotstar has already extended a significant lead over Netflix in Indonesia, the fourth most populous country in the world.

The electricity business is still at a very early stage of development in the emerging market in Indonesia, with only 3 percent of the country’s population of 270 million subscribing to SVOD services, according to a new report by the leading local adviser Media Partners Asia (MPA).

As of January 16, Disney + Hotstar has 2.5 million subscribers in Indonesia, followed by local Southeast Asian streaming companies Viu and Vidio, with 1.5 million and 1.1 million subscribers, respectively – and Netflix left in fourth place with just 850,000 subs.

The launch of Disney + Hotstar in September helped boost the country’s overall SVOD usage. Just before Disney’s local launch, Indonesia had an estimated 3.4 million paying streaming subscribers, but by January 16, the total number of employees had risen by 106 percent to about 7 million, according to MPA’s research.

“The growth of SVOD in Indonesia, the most populous market in Asia after China and India, is encouraging, but it still has a long way to go,” said Anthony Dobson, deputy president of MPA, noting that only ten percent of Indonesian households are currently subscribers. But as ‘investment in local and Asian content accelerates’, there will be ‘significant room for future growth’, he added.

The streaming offer of Disney + Hotstar in Indonesia includes movies, series and factual content from Disney, Fox, Marvel, LucasFilm, Pixar and National Geographic and Disney +, as well as more than 250 local Indonesian movies. Disney got off to a strong start in the country thanks to a two-year exclusive mobile partnership with wireless network provider Telkomsel, which enables telco to merge and market Disney + Hotstar with its mobile data boards. The average monthly subscriber prices of Disney + Hotstar in Indonesia range from $ 0.80 to $ 1.40 for Telkomsel users or $ 1.10 to $ 2.60 for direct subscribers – significantly less than Netflix’s mobile plan, which is $ 3 , Costs 6 per month (other Netflix prices are between $ 8.10 and $ 12.50 in Indonesia).

“Disney’s [local] The content acquisition strategy further encouraged its appeal to Indonesian consumers, “said MPA researchers. More than 20 percent of all Disney + Hotstar minutes consumed in Indonesia in December 2020 were delivered by local Indonesian content.

The Mandalorian also a surprising breakthrough among the Indonesian public, despite the fact that the Star Wars franchise has historically underperformed in the country. Both seasons of the hit Disney + Original were in the fourth quarter of 2020 one of Indonesia’s most viewed pieces on streaming platforms. ” The Mandalorian can act as a ‘bridgehead’ that attracts Indonesians to the country Star Wars franchise in numbers not seen before, “MPA noted.
