One of the most celebrated matches of 2020, Disco Elysium, is being rejected in Australia for its upcoming Final Cut – it actually means it will be banned in the country.
As noted by ScreenHub, the Australia Classification Board said in a statement that Final Cut was denied a rating, inter alia because of the depiction of sex, drug abuse or addiction, crime, cruelty and violence. The government agency also said that Disco Elysium violated the rule of “riotous or heinous phenomena in such a way as to offend the standards of morality, decency and decency generally accepted by reasonable adults.”
Disco Elysium remains available for sale on Steam in Australia, just like since 2019. As Kotaku AU noted, the original version of the game was ‘never really submitted’ for classification in Australia, but the Final Cut is also coming to consoles and so needs a classification, it seems.
Other games, such as Call of Duty: WWII, Saints Row IV and South Park: The Stick of Truth, have all been taken care of to get through the classification process in Australia. It remains to be seen whether developer ZA / UM will modify the Final Cut to sell it in Australia.
The Final Cut of Disco Elysium will be launched on March 30 for PC, PS4, PS5 and Google Stadiums. The PC upgrade is available for free to all owners of the original version. There is no word yet on a version of the game for Xbox or Nintendo Switch.
The Final Cut adds a total of more than one million words to the game, as well as new political vision quests and quality of life adjustments.
