UPDATE: Walt Disney Imagine Scott Trowbridge Confirmed Twitter that the light saber exhibited by Josh D’Amaro was in fact genuine, not CGI, and that it is still not ready to be shown to the public.
There are many questions today about whether the light saber that Josh D’Amaro unveiled today was real or CGI, and whether I would share photos or videos.
Yes it was / is really really, and ….. not yet. #Bringingagalaxyfarfarawaytolifehttps://t.co/lMc964tn8Y

During a virtual event called ‘A Special Look Inside Disney Parks’ presented by Josh D’Amaro (Chairman | Disney Parks, Experiences and Products), Disney showed what looks like a real light saber. We’re not talking about the ones you can buy in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Disneyland. We say it was a real light saber. as in a light blade emerging from a lever with sounds.
The virtual presentation was for invited media / guests and focused mainly on a conversation between D’amaro and Kevin Feige (President | Marvel Studios). The conversation ends with the announcement of the opening of Avengers campus on June 4, 2021. According to Carlye Wisel, D’Amaro said, “You never know what we’re going to come up with next, according to Carlye Wisel.” Then he pulls out a box that is like a handle, turns it on to reveal a light blade, and claims, “It really is.”
This is how it went down:
Josh D’Amaro said goodbye and ended with ‘… and you never know what we’re going to come up with next’.
He * hoped * for a light saber * out of this little box (like a handle, but much wider) and added, “It really is.” ššš pic.twitter.com/dkSFLSJiGW

According to Scott Gustin, Disney has no plans to release photos or videos of the light bear seen during the virtual event.
Update: I’m told Disney will not release a video of the light saber.
Note: I really hope I’m wrong and that someone can push this tweet in my face and say I’m an idiot. I literally beg …

However, we can better understand how it worked thanks to patents filed by Disney in 2017. The patent is on a sword device with a retractable, internally illuminated blade. In the patent, Disney also acknowledges that CGI is needed to make these swords in movies, to realistically expand and retract a blade. Disney also says: ‘In short, the inventors realized that there was a need for a new special effects device that could be used as a stage prop, toy or collectible that effectively simulates fictional energy swords, including the light sores that appears in many popular movies. “
The patent for Disney’s lightsaber is intriguing. Actually, a blade of plastic is cut lengthwise and rolled on a spool like a tape measure. The blade will radiate with the two blade pieces rolling outwards and connecting to an end cap with a flexible strip of lights on. It can also pull back into the charge.
It’s just a patent for Disney’s design and that does not necessarily mean that it is the light saber device that Josh D’Amaro used in the presentation, but it may be similar.

D’Amaro wrote in a post on Disney Parks Blog: ‘I recently had the chance to catch up with our team at Walt Disney Imagineering Research & Development, and although the projects they shared are in an early stage of exploration , these are the types of projects that will shape the future of the gas experience for decades to come. Leslie Evans, executive R&D Imagineer, explained how the character platforms we work on create unique abilities and experiences that are not humanly possible today. can not wait to share more with you in the near future – this team really pushes the boundaries of creativity, technology and storytelling. ‘It could also be a reference to Disney actually succeeding in making a real lightsaber.
It is also possible that the light saber was not real and that it is a tease of what is to come in the future. There will be a light saber experience about the Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser experience starting in 2021 and it could be a look at what they are preparing for the cruise-like experience. It could be solely for the experience, a product they hope to sell in the future, or a prop for a special show. Hopefully we will receive more details soon.
