The Detroit Lions suburbs may not take away the quarterback. While the Matthew Stafford deal has yet to become official, the Lions have reportedly also discussed moving the backup Chase Daniel away in a trade, according to Adam Schefter, ESPN.
Daniel signed a $ 13.05 million three-year deal with Detroit last year to be the team’s backer behind Stafford. He played four games in 2020, with his major performance in Week 16 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after Stafford came down with an injury once in the game. In the match, Daniel scored 13-out-18 for 86 yards.
Daniel is considered a twelve-year veteran as a solid resource in the quarterback room, something the Lions need if they decide to take a quarterback in the April draft. However, the Lions only hired a former NFL fullback in Mark Brunell to be the team’s new coach.
On top of that, the Lions would benefit the Lions financially. Daniel will seize $ 5.3 million from Detroit’s 2021 cap space, which looks a bit large, as they are already spending $ 27.8 million on Jared Goff and $ 19 million on dead cap from Stafford’s contract. Daniel’s move would clear up $ 3.8 million, while the team only cost $ 1.5 million in death costs – not to mention the obvious concept compensation benefit from everything they get in return.
As of now, it’s unclear how much market there is for the 34-year-old quarterback, but the Lions probably won’t ask for much in return.
