Bungie officially unveiled season 13 of Destiny 2 today and it adds new strikes, armor sets and a custom activity called Battlegrounds. Season of the elect also visit again where Destiny 2 began by bringing in the Cabal’s Empress Caiatl as the main villain.
This is the first time that players Caiatl, the daughter of Calus, the former Cabal emperor and Destiny 2‘s original attacking boss, rather than just reading about her outdoor dumping. Season of the elect begins with the new empress proposing an alliance with the Vanguard to fight back against the growing threat of the mysterious black pyramids and the hive god Xivu Arath. Negotiations are apparently breaking out, forcing Zavala and co. in another match with Destiny ‘‘s race of overgrown Goombas.
Here is the trailer:
In terms of content, season 13 adds the following:
- The Devil’s Lair and Fallen SABER Strikes from Destination 1
- A new strike called Proving Grounds takes place in the Last City and unlocks later in the season.
- A seasonal armor called Praefectus
- An exotic arch called Ticuu’s Divination
- A three-player match-making activity called Battlegrounds
- The return of the Guardian Games event
- The HELM is a new spectacular area for activities
These are just some of the things Bungie has revealed before. refreshing loot on the moon and in the dream city, new ritual weapons from each of the Tower’s three main sellers, and the return of umbrella programs and the prismatic repairer. Trials of Osiris loot is also being refurbished. Whether it means the ‘more than 25 exotic, legendary and ritual weapons’ that Bungie promised in season 13 will feel enough to see.
Destiny 2 feels a bit depressed at the moment as its sunset mechanics obsolete older equipment faster than new loot can be added. It does not help that many season 13s, at least initially, were built on old content from the previous game and previous seasons. Combine questions around it with the news that some of the players’ favorite weapons will get boring and I’m very skeptical about the direction of the game starting next season.
Hopefully this proves me wrong. Season of the elect goes live next week on February 9th and lasts until May 11th.

Update – 11/05 ET, 2/2/21: Bungie’s has now released the full version calendar also for next season. Battlegrounds looks like it will be a rotating event with different objectives and bosses, while the new Proving Grounds strike will only be added at the end of March. And of course, the whole thing ends with a new version of the Guardian Games last year at the end of April. Hopefully it’s less boring this time and the reward is betterr.
