The challenge title is an English translation of the German “Blut und Ehre”, which makes many appearances in both fiction and non-fiction works based around World War II and the Third Reich. After a Bungie spokesman was criticized for using the phrase on social media, he said Kotaku and indicated that the title of the challenge will be changed in an upcoming update. The statement reads:
“Any connection to anti-Semitism in Destiny is completely unintentional. Bungie is strongly committed to inclusion and human rights and will never stand up for anti-Semitism. We are already preparing corrections in an upcoming patch. Were hurt by the references, and we are ours. community grateful that they brought their attention to our attention. ‘
While Bungie great success with Destiny 2, especially after moving the game to the free-to-play format, the legendary developer has even greater aspirations. The studio has announced plans for further growth in 2021, with a new leadership team leading the expansion of the franchise to other forms of media. A large headquarters and an international office were also set out in these plans. Outside Destiny, Bungie has also announced that a video game belonging to a brand new intellectual property will be released by 2025, along with the new Destiny content comes to light.
Through a series of extremely successful games, Bungie has become one of the leading developers of the video game industry. With this success, however, comes an abundance of attention and investigation. Although the phrase “Blood and Honor” may seem harmless, the historical connection with the Nazi regime makes it offensive to many. Choosing this phrase as a challenge title in Destiny 2 appears tasteless, but Bungie’s quick response should be commended.
