JERSEY CITY, NJ On the eve of perhaps the biggest game of the season, the Cowboys are already securing pieces for next year and beyond.
Offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, whose name has been linked as a potential candidate for the Boise State head coaching job, has signed a multi-year contract extension to stay with the Cowboys.
“I’m very excited to stay with the Dallas Cowboys as the offensive coordinator,” Moore said in a statement Saturday night. “I will no longer follow the head coaching at Boise State. I love Boise State. I will always work for them, and I hope to be a part of the program again one day.”
Moore, who won 50 games as a quarterback for Boise State from 2008-11, is one of the greatest players in BSU history. And when the vacancy for head coaches became available recently, Moore was an immediate candidate for the position.
His offense with the Cowboys has been successful since he became coordinator two years ago. Even with a few injuries this year, including a setback for Dak Prescott for the season, the Cowboys are 12th in overall offense this year, but last year in first place.
With Dak, Tyron Smith, La’el Collins and Blake Jarwin returning next year, along with Zack Martin, who also missed half of the season, the Cowboys should be a dynamic offense again, especially with Moore next year return.
Moore played six seasons at quarterback in the NFL, starting three years in Detroit and then three with the 2015-’17 Cowboys. He joined the Cowboys coaching staff in 2018 as the coach of the quarterback before being promoted to the attacking coordinator and playing officer last year.
“We’re building something special here in Dallas,” Moore said. “I’m grateful to the Jones family and Mike McCarthy for giving me the opportunity to coach these special players. I’m excited to put it all together and complete the task.”
However, the Cowboys are not done with this season yet. At 6-9, the Cowboys must win Sunday against the Giants and then hope for a loss by Washington against the Eagles. That would make the Cowboys the only team to have seven wins in the division and advance them to the post-season.
