Florida’s experience of the coronavirus pandemic has confirmed that ‘the closure approach is a failed approach,’ Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis told The Ingraham Angle on Thursday.
‘Not only was it absolutely devastating for those societies [that implemented it], “DeSantis told host Laura Ingraham,” the COVID per capita results were worse in places like New York and New Jersey and Pennsylvania. “
The governor recently met with the authors of the Great Barrington Declaration, a small consortium of epidemiologists who prescribed a “focused protection” strategy to combat the virus, which often contradicted the edicts of Democratic governors and some federal health authorities.
‘This is one of the best experts in the world [that have] could confirm that Florida’s approach was the right approach, ”the governor explained.
DESANTIS JUDGES CRITICAL THEORY, SAY IT WILL NOT BE LEARNED IN FLORIDA CLASSROOMS
DeSantis added that its administration oversaw the vaccination of 70% of senior citizens in the state, far more than many other states per capita.
“In Florida, we followed a strategy of focused protection on the elderly and vulnerable, with the economy open and schools open,” DeSantis said. “The result is that our unemployment rate is significantly lower than the national average. Our COVID deaths per capita are less than the national average.”
In this regard, Ingraham noted that even DeSantis’ local critics were complementary to dealing with the outbreak.
Miami Mayor Francis X. Suarez criticized Tallahassee in a recent interview for banning local authorities from enforcing mask mandates with fines and other penalties.
However, Suarez added: ‘I have to praise [DeSantis] because he did make courageous decisions, and the fact is that the economy is relatively open and booming. ‘

DeSantis responded by saying that it does believe that local governments should have control over certain aspects of health policy, but he believes that such prescriptions should be ‘advisory’.
Miami-Dade County, Broward County, Palm Beach County, as well as Monroe County all have local mask mandates.
