Denver Broncos: Joe Ellis Won’t Seek 2021 Extension

In an interview with 9News on Tuesday, Joe Ellis announced that he will not seek any extension after his contract expires. His current contract, like John Elway, runs until March 2022. That means both Elway and Ellis can be done in Denver after next season.

“I do not intend to extend it beyond just an interim period if necessary,” Ellis said in an interview with 9NEWS on Tuesday. “But it would be dedicated to replacing a club president or chief executive, depending on where the next owner, be it Brittany or someone else, ends up.”

Mike Klis broke down the whole situation pretty well in the link above and is worth reading.

The implications of this news could be huge for the future for the franchise. Since the legal battle between the Bowlen children continues, and as of now has not been resolved, a sale is in my opinion much more likely than a resolution.

With Ellis bending so early, I think it could also indicate that he thinks a sale is almost certain. If the transfer of power goes to Brittany Bowlen, he will probably have to hold on for a while to help her take over the day-to-day management of the franchise.

As a fan, I think this is actually a good thing. I believe none of the Bowlen kids showed the passion and love for football that Pat Bowlen had, and they probably would not appreciate the value culture and desire to compete for championships like Pat. A new owner can inject new blood and ideas into the organization that can help him break free from the five-year rift since winning Super Bowl 50.

The other caveat here is the immediate implications of the Broncos general manager search. If I were to feel that there is likely to be a sale, why would a very sought after type of general manager talent want this job, knowing that there would already be new ownership in place?
