Denmark permanently stops using AstraZeneca vaccine

Denmark became the first European country to permanently discontinue use of AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine.

The Danish Health Authority Wednesday announced the country’s vaccination would continue without the AstraZeneca vaccine due to the possible association with rare cases of blood clots.

The country’s health agency stressed that the benefits of the shot outweigh the risks, but he decided not to use the sting as the outbreak in the country is currently under control and other vaccines are available.

“Based on the scientific findings, our overall assessment is that there is a real risk of serious side effects associated with the use of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine,” Søren Brostrøm, Director-General of the Danish Health Authority, said in a statement Wednesday.

‘Amid an epidemic, it was a difficult decision to continue our vaccination program without an effective and readily available vaccine against COVID-19. However, we have other vaccines at our disposal, and the epidemic is currently under control, ”he said.

Brostrøm said that a large part of the older population had already been vaccinated and that those who had not yet received a vaccine were less at risk.

Denmark was the first country to suspend the use of all AstraZeneca vaccines in March due to safety concerns, followed by several other European countries, several of whom resumed the shots in their vaccination efforts.

A Safety Committee of the European Medicines Agency (EMA) closed last week that low-platelet abnormal blood clots should be listed as a very rare side effect of the AstraZeneca vaccine, but still recommend its use, as the benefits outweigh the risks of COVID-19.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has also recommended countries still use the vaccine.
