Democrats are implementing a new proposal that limits the number of people eligible for a third stimulus test, a source familiar with internal discussions confirmed to Insider.
The latest version of the plan would pay $ 1400 to individuals earning $ 50,000 or less. Married couples earning $ 100,000 or less will receive a full check.
In addition, heads of households earning $ 120,000 or less will also receive the full cash payment.
The person was given anonymity to discuss ongoing conversations, but stressed that the plan is not final and that it is still subject to change. The Washington Post first reported that Democrats are examining proposals to adjust the amount of the revenue test.
For the past few months, President Joe Biden has preferred sending stimulus checks as the U.S. fights the pandemic. Biden and senior Democrats are pushing to supplement the $ 600 incentive payments with another $ 1,400 extra, bringing the total amount spread since December to $ 2,000.
The third round of payments is aimed at the lower end of the revenue scale as calls go up in Congress to direct the checks to the Americans who need it most.
Biden’s rescue package currently offers full payment of $ 1400 to individuals earning $ 75,000 or less and couples earning $ 150,000 and less. Parents with children also receive $ 1400 extra per child, which means a family of four can receive $ 5,600.
The timing of the stimulus payments depends on when the aid packages passed. Democrats in both houses of Congress kicked off the reconciliation process to prepare for the approval of the entire $ 1.9 billion package without Republican votes.
Biden, along with other senior White House officials, says they are willing to negotiate the revenue thresholds of stimulus checks.
“Further targeting does not mean the size of the check, it means the income level of people receiving the check,” White House press secretary Jen Psaki said Wednesday. “This is something that is being discussed.”
Democrats aim to pass legislation by mid-March, when improved unemployment insurance for millions of Americans will expire.
