Democratic governor of Illinois, mayor of Chicago, roars at White Sox’s home opener

Illinois Democratic Gov. JB Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot received a nasty reception on Thursday when they appeared for the Chicago White Sox home opener at the Guaranteed Rate Field.

Pritzker and Lightfoot were greeted by a chorus of angry as they walked onto the field before the first pitch. A Chicago Sun-Times reporter noted that Democratic politicians pulled more money while walking on the field than their White Sox opponent, the Kansas City Royals.

About 9,000 fans would attend the team’s first home game of the 2021 season. Attendance at White Sox home games is currently limited to 22% capacity to comply with coronavirus-related restrictions.

Lightfoot, who has served as mayor of Chicago since 2019, is a White Sox season ticket holder. She was also yelled at when she attended the crosstown Chicago Cubs’ home opener at Wrigley Field last week.

Lightfoot received criticism from both sides of the aisle during her tenure. In a recent column, the Chicago Tribune noted that the mayor “has not yet fulfilled the most important campaign promises,” such as a promise to set up an elected school board.

Like Democratic governors in several other states, Pritzker has been criticized for imposing harsh restrictions during the coronavirus pandemic. The governor defended his handling of the crisis while announcing his state budget proposal in February.

“It was all about striving for one goal and only one goal – to save as many lives as possible,” Pritzker was quoted as saying by the Chicago Tribune.
