Joe Biden’s statement in his inaugural address that democracy was the winner of the presidential election was used by many newspapers to mark his entry into the Oval Office.
Along with several other titles, the Guardian uses a poster cover with a photo of the president delivering his speech on the steps of the Capitol next to the caption: “Democracy has prevailed”.
The New York Times chooses the same message with the headline ‘Democracy has prevailed’: Biden promises to restore people ‘above a complete picture of Biden and his wife embracing Jill.
The normally typographically conservative Financial Times also goes along with a big picture of Biden and again the same headline: “democracy has prevailed”.
The Scottish the cover is one picture of Biden and it speaks a longer excerpt from the same part of the new president’s speech. “Democracy is precious. Democracy is fragile. In this hour, my friends, democracy has prevailed ”.
The Washington Post se caption is ‘Pray:’ Unity is the way ” above a photo of the 46th president taking the oath of office.
The Telegraph headline is another quote from Biden – “End this civil war”, while the Times go with “Time for Unity”.
The Mirror zero on Biden’s opening lines with an “A day of history .. a day of hope”, and uses photos of the president and his historic female vice president, Kamala Harris.
The Mail is a “new dawn for America” featuring photos of Trump leaving Washington and Biden and his wife, Jill, celebrating his inauguration. “Don’s gone … let’s go Joe!” Said the headline.
The i can also not resist a little rhyme with the caption “Ready, steady, Joe!”
The pushing it out uses Biden’s “civil war” quote in one of its subheads, but deals with a British angle and how the relationship between the new president and Boris Johnson could be for his headline: ‘Great moment for the US and Britain’.
Metro chose to use Donald Trump’s words against him with the caption: “Make America great again”.
In Europe, El Mundo in Spain is a picture of Biden and the caption ‘Joe Biden:’ Hay mucho que sanar en EEUU ”, which roughly translates as “We have a lot to heal”.
Picture, The largest newspaper in Europe, has the headline “Comeback für Amerika”, while it is its sober competitor Suddeutsche Zeitung goes with “Zeitenvende in Amerika”, or “New era in America”.
The South China Morning Post bears the Bidens, Harris and husband Doug Emhoff waving under the heading: “World wakes up to new American leader”.
