DC police make several arrests ahead of major protests against Trump

The most important draw will take place on Wednesday morning before the congress, where the president himself will address a demonstration outside the White House called the march “March for Trump / Save America”. Thousands are expected to attend the event, organized by pro-Trump group Women for America First.

The president has made a series of unsuccessful attempts to overthrow his loss, both through lawsuits and through attempts to persuade state legislators to ignore the vote in their states and appoint pro-Trump voters. As his last greeting to Mary, the president tried to sharpen his supporters on the January 6 certification, claiming it provided an opportunity for Congress to reverse the election. With Democrats in charge of the House and dozens of GOP senators resisting the attempt, the plot is also doomed to fail.

The president also raised the heat on Vice President Mike Pence, who will preside over the ceremony, claiming he can intervene in the count. But the ceremonial role does not give Pence such powers.

Still, Trump’s most ardent supporters heeded his call. In anticipation of possible violence, Mayor Muriel Bowser, Washington, DC, mobilized the national guard and increased police presence.

The country’s capital experienced equally numerous and sometimes chaotic protests earlier this year after Minneapolis police killed George Floyd.
