DC Comics reportedly monitors NFT market

Reports from last week indicate that comic book publisher DC Comics is considering entering the market for non-fungal characters.

According to a report from Gizmodo’s i09, the news came as part of a letter issued by DC Comics’ legal affairs office last week.

“DC explores opportunities to enter the market for the distribution and sale of original DC digital art through NFTs, including new art created specifically for the NFT market, as well as original digital art provided for DC’s comic book publications,” is noted in the letter.

Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) are essentially digital certificates linked to a specific artwork, with the data as a unique token in a blockchain network such as Ethereum. The idea behind the concept is that NFTs are digital versions of the indivisible, rare nature of artwork in the physical world.

But as Gizmodo notes, the letter also serves as a warning to DC staff members and freelancers about the issuance of non-fungible signs containing the parable of the company’s licensed characters. According to Decrypt, comic book artist José Delgo was involved in the creation and sale of a $ 1.85 million Wonder Woman-themed NFT collection.

The letter further states:

“As DC is investigating the complexity of the NFT market, and we are working on a reasonable and equitable solution for all parties involved, including fans and collectors, please note that the offer is for sale digital images with DC’s intellectual property with or without NFTs, whether provided for DC’s publications or delivered outside the scope of one’s contractual relationship with DC, is not permitted. If any of you are interested in any of your DC art in an NFT program, you must let Lawrence Ganem, DC’s VP, Talent Services, know. ‘

The letter gives no indication of when DC comics can dip into NFTs.

“We expect the participation of DC’s freelance talent to be an integral part of the NFT program that DC is implementing. We will share further information as it becomes available, and we appreciate your cooperation and partnership,” the letter reads.
