Dan Quinn appointed by Dallas Cowboys, no longer an option for 49ers

The 49ers list of substitutes for defense coordinator Robert Saleh, if he gets a head coach position, is shrunk by one. Saleh has been a popular candidate this season after keeping up with at least five teams.

Former Falcons head coach Dan Quinn joins the Dallas Cowboys as their defense coordinator after firing Mike Nolan after a disastrous 2020 campaign.

Quinn was the Seahawks’ defense coordinator in 2013 and 2014 when he both finished second. They were also third in yards in ’13, and first in yards in ’14. He took over as the Falcons’ head coach in 2015 where he helped lead Atlanta to Super Bowl LI. 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan has been his attacking coordinator for the first two years.

His experience with the defense scheme that Saleh used with the 49ers during the first four seasons, coupled with his familiarity with Shanahan, made him a popular name among coaches who would likely take over at DC in San Francisco.
