Dallas police officer beaten and killed by suspected drunk driver

A Dallas police officer was hit by a suspected drunk driver and killed early Saturday morning when he stopped the scene of a previous highway accident, the Dallas Police Department said.

‘It is with a heavy heart that I announce this morning around 0125 [1:25 a.m.] a @DallasPD officer, who was working at an accident scene, was beaten and killed by a DWI driver, “Chief Eddie Garcia tweeted.” Our department is once again resilient, but we are proud of the strength of its family. God bless my brother. ‘

The officer was standing outside his marked patrol vehicle at about 1:45 a.m. with his emergency lights in the northern lanes of the North Central Highway at Walnut Hill Lane, when a four-door Kia Forte was driving at high speed, the department said.

The officer was transported to Baylor Hospital where he subsequently succumbed to his injuries.

The driver, who is described as a 32-year-old black man, sustained no injuries and is awaiting charges from police.

Meanwhile, officials are questioning a female passenger in his vehicle. She was also not injured in the collision.
