Dallas County reported new cases of coronavirus and four additional deaths due to COVID-19 on Monday, 1867.
Two of the youngest victims were Richardson men, in their 50s and 70s. The other two were a Cedar Hill man in his 60s and a DeSoto man in his 70s. Both had underlying health conditions that put them at higher risk for complications from the virus, officials said.
County Judge Clay Jenkins said in a written statement that, with the opening of the mega-vaccination site in Dallas County Monday at Fair Park, officials hope to immunize thousands of people a week against the disease.
He warns that January and February will continue to be difficult months, as hospitalizations for the coronavirus and new infections remain high. But by March, many health workers and North Texans who are most vulnerable to COVID-19 will have protection against the disease, he said.
With ‘every consecutive month we have to get stronger in our fight against COVID, but it depends on the smart decisions of all of us, to do everything in our power with small sacrifices and smart decisions,’ Jenkins said.

Of the new cases reported Monday, 1,813 are confirmed and 54 likely. The newly reported cases bring the province’s total confirmed cases to 194,380 and probable cases to 24,706. The province recorded 1,777 total COVID-19 deaths.
The province said it only considers positive antigen tests (sometimes called rapid tests) as likely cases; some antibody and “household” results were previously included.
While other North Texas counties give estimates for how many people have recovered from the virus, Dallas County officials do not report recovery, noting that the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention does not use the measure.
Health officials use hospitalizations, intensive care visits and emergency visits as key statistics to track the real-time impact of COVID-19 in the country. Hospitalizations have been at record levels in recent days, but due to a delay in reporting over the weekend, new data will be available on Tuesday.

The seven-day average positivity rate across the country for molecular tests, based on the date of collection of the test sample, was 18.7% on Sunday. State health officials said the use of data based on when people were tested was the most accurate percentage.
For antigen tests, the positivity rate for the same period was 11.8%.
