Cyberpunk 2077 Publisher CD Project Focused on ‘Cyber Attack’

CD Project, the company behind Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher 3, was targeted in a major “cyber attack” on Monday according to a statement posted on Twitter. Hackers allegedly “stole certain data belonging to CD Projekt capital group,” said CD Projekt. The company said it was currently securing its servers and recovering encrypted data.

In the ransom note published by CD Projekt, the hackers said they had stolen source code for Cyberpunk 2077, The Witcher 3, Gwent, and “the version that has not yet been released Witcher 3. The group said it also had access to “documents relating to accounting, administration, law, HR, [and] investor relations. “CD Projekt does not confirm the stolen data, but says in its statement that no personal user data is compromised for any of its services.

Polygon contacted CD Project for more information.

Hackers gave CD Project 48 hours to start contact before ‘the source code will be sold or leaked online’.

‘Your public image will decline even more and people will see how you [sic] shit your company is functioning, ”the hacker said in the note. “Investors are losing confidence in your company and the stock will plunge even lower.”

CD Projekt said it would not negotiate with the hackers. He said he was aware that the “compromised data” could be released, and that the company was “taking the necessary steps to mitigate the consequences of such a release.” CD Projekt is working with authorities and ‘IT forensic specialists’ to investigate the hack.

Monday’s hack follows a rocky launch for Cyberpunk 2077, the highly anticipated title released in December 2020. The game was introduced with a myriad of performance issues – especially on last-generation consoles. CD Project and other store windows were forced to repay the game, which was later removed from Sony’s PlayStation Store. CD Projekt also faces several lawsuits from investors.

Ahead Cyberpunk 2077With the launch, the company was criticized for ‘poor management and contempt of the people who make our games’, as well as a history of transphobic marketing.

Studio managers of CD Projekt have since apologized for the difficult launch.

“We ignored signals about the need for extra time to refine the game on the last-generation consoles,” said Adam Kiciński, co-CEO of CD Projekt, in December. “It was the wrong approach and against our business philosophy.”

CD Projekt Red, the developing arm of the company, has patches and hotfixes for Cyberpunk 2077. Important updates are coming later this year, the developer said.
