Cyberpunk 2077 Patches and Updates Monitored by Polish Government

The Polish Office of Competition and Consumer Protection (UOKiK) is interested in updates of Cyberpunk 2077 and plans to monitor its progress.

The Polish Office of Competition and Consumer Protection (UOKiK) is the latest company interested in the development of CD Projekt Red of Cyberpunk 2077, as the government agency plans to monitor the progress of the local studio as it rolls out patches and updates – especially on consoles. To put it lightly, Cyberpunk 2077 did not start last month under the best of circumstances. After a controversy over the reviews and their extreme absence for PlayStation and Xbox hardware at launch, the long-awaited RPG was a technical mess on the last generation of consoles, but an abysmal rate, sub-graphics and constant crashes were only a part of problem.

CD Project quickly began to face accusations of deliberately misleading consumers, leading to a refund failure that culminated in PlayStation denoting the title on its store window. Meanwhile, people like Xbox, Best Buy and GameStop have briefly adjusted their refund policies for Cyberpunk 2077 return. To make matters worse, the Polish studio will also have to defend itself against class action lawsuits filed by investors. However, CD Project shareholders are not the only ones asking difficult questions.

The Polish agency UOKiK is also now keeping an eye on the situation. The Polish website Maatstaf.pl (translated via Reddit) reports that UOKiK spokesperson Małgorzata Cieloch states that the agency will now monitor Cyberpunk 2077 post-launch updates, especially regarding fixes that should stabilize console iterations. According to Cieloch’s translated statement, CD Projekt can explain what went wrong with the final build-up. UOKiK is apparently also interested in how the company can respond to dissatisfied customers. It is understood that if the UOKiK president makes a decision that does not end in the studio’s favor, the company could face a fine of up to ten percent of its annual revenue. Even with the 13 million copies available at Cyberpunk 2077‘s launch it would be a hefty price to pay.

The full translation version of Cieloch’s statement reads:

“We ask the entrepreneur to explain the problems with the game and the actions he takes. We will look at how the producer is making corrections or solving problems that make it impossible to play on consoles, but also how he intends to act towards people who have lodged complaints and are dissatisfied with the purchase due to the lack of possibility to play the game on their equipment, despite the previous assurance of the producer. ‘

Interestingly, this may not be the end of the publisher’s CD Projects Cyberpunk 2077-related problems. The lawsuits so far have only concerned the investors of the company. Who knows if there are consumers who plan to take their own actions, similar to class actions against Bethesda? Dropout 76 and Sega and Gearbox’s own fiasco with Aliens: Colonial Marines.

At the very least, the developers of CD Projekt Red are working to fix the various problems that still plague Cyberpunk 2077. The last major patch was completed on all platforms at the end of December 2020, and there are two more majors on the near horizon. The first of these will be launched this month, with a second plan rolling out sometime in February.
