CVS stores in 18 Bay Area cities to start vaccinating people Friday

Vaccination Nation is finally in full swing with both large-scale mass vaccination sites such as Levi’s Stadium and Moscone Center now open, and with CVS stores starting appointments across the region on Friday.

About 81,900 vaccine doses from a federal grant of 250,000 doses come to California via CVS sites. And what was initially announced as the introduction of vaccines at CVS stores in just three Bay Area cities has already expanded to locations in 18 cities where appointments begin on Friday, February 12th. The full list of cities – which is expected in the coming weeks – is below.

All of these CVS stores will still only vaccinate people in the Phase 1a qualification level, who are primarily health care workers, parental care workers and the elderly over 65. a vaccine at their local CVS, possible and depending on the supply. Go to CVS.com to schedule an appointment.

A quick search by SFist found available slots for Monday at 1900 Avenue in San Francisco, but locations in Oakland, Berkeley, Lafayette and Sonoma had already been booked. It is not clear how many CVS locations have vaccines in San Francisco or Oakland.

New appointments will be open every day, according to the CVS website, and those interested in getting vaccinated should come back every day. (It is not clear if it is after midnight or what time new appointments are available each morning.)

CVS originally announced that vaccinations would begin today, February 11, but earlier this week the company announced that they would push back to Friday to ensure adequate inventory.

The federal program to support the implementation at chain pharmacies also includes a contract with Walgreens, but the two companies initially divided the countries where they both have stores where they make vaccinations available. As USA Today reports, CVS covers California for now, along with ten other states, while Walgreens will also give vaccines at select stores in 17 states, but for now not in California.

Until this week, vaccines were only available through city and country health departments, and through health care networks and hospitals.

San Franciscans may do better to be vaccinated by making an appointment at one of the inoculation stations in the city at the Moscone Center of City College, but the number of appointments available each day has remained limited. This website has links to all the options for appointing vaccines in SF.

As of Wednesday, 106,111 San Francisco people received their first dose of vaccine – 14% of the population over the age of 16, up from 11% earlier this week.
